Conficker Threat Set To Launch On April 1. Use ESET To Keep Your System Safe

There’s a scene in Star Trek: The Next Generation when the crew of the Enterprise encounters The Borg for the first time. At the end when Captain Picard berates Q about the loss of 18 crew members, Q responds”

“If you can’t take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It’s not safe out here. It’s wondrous – with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it’s not for the timid.”

I guess the same can be said for the Internet!

Just about a week ago, I received this article from Yahoo regarding a new threat. Actually, it’s an old threat that has evolved and developed from a major nuisance into a potentially global pandemic.

Referred to as Conficker, this thing made an appearance late last year, resulting in Microsoft releasing several security updates to address this beastie.

The latest variation is referred to as Conficker C and is scheduled to “detonate” on April 1.

As a sales executive, small business owner or entrepreneur, the last thing you need is for the Conficker worm usurping control of your system and assimilating it into one of the largest Borgnets... I mean botnets online.

Fortunately, ESET has a solution, but you will need the use of an uninfected system in order to download the necessary updates cleanly. In other words, you need a system that is not running Conficker in memory.

Here are the instructions from the ESET Threat Blog. They are pretty straightforward. Incidentally, the solution involves downloading three Microsoft patches. Three patches that should already be installed on your system if you’ve got the Microsoft automatic updates turned on.

If you don’t have automatic updates turn on, now would be a good time to do it.

But first, follow the instructions here at ESET and get our system secured before downloading all of the Microsoft updates.
